Sadako heard about an old saying, "Fold 1,000 paper cranes and your wish will come true." So she started folding thousands of paper cranes. They have come to symbolize peace. Over 10 million are offered each year here from all over the world.
When it became difficult for Sadako to move her fingers, she began folding the cranes with a needle. They were much smaller.
