Mumbai, India Photo Gallery
In India the crew's families came for visits on the ship. We loved this!
Gateway to India.
Engraved in the gate-This was built to welcome the king and queen.
Taj Mahal Palace Hotel-This is one of the sites of terrorist attacks of 2008 called 26/11 attacks.
Gateway of India and Taj Mahal Palace & Tower Hotel. This is where we got our ferry ride.
The ferries had old tires all the way around them to serve as bumpers.
Elephanta Island, or Gharapuri (literally meaning "the city of caves").
One of the caves on Elephanta Island, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These caves are from around the 5th and 6th centuries.
Shiva as Nataraja (lord of dance).
Kalyanasundara-Murti-depicting the marriage of Shiva and Parvati.
A temple in one of the caves.
The central panel of Shiva.
Another of the caves which are predominantly dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva.
Of course monkeys are at the temple caves.
Another monkey.
This waiter is bringing different side dished to add to our tray.
One of our waiters at Chetana Vegetarian Restaurant. Thali (meaning tray) is their specialty.
My Thali, It's like a sampler platter of the best Indian cuisine. In India they eat with one hand, the right one only. I found this to be challenging.
Victoria Station built in the 1800's is still an active train station, but now named Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus.
I love the beautiful architecture.
The top dome.
More of Victoria Station, also a site of the terrorist attack of 2008 where 58 were killed and 104 injured.
Inside the station was very busy, as most use this type of transportation to get around the city.
The Colaba Causeway Market.
In the Colaba Causeway Market. Mangos were in season and our guide said that the people there are crazy over them.
I love seeing markets in other countries. They are very interesting.
Another market photo.
Walking along this street among many vehicles was a little stressful.
Taking mangos home or to the market?
Along Marine Drive, a very nice walkway along the shore.
The cricket team on a billboard. Cricket is a very popular sport in India.
A view of the beach and city.
This home is the most expensive private residence in the world. It has 27 floors and 5 people live there.
Our guide pointed out this picture of their prime minister, Narendra Modi, who is very popular there. He's been in office since 2014 and looks to be elected again in a few days.
They need this sign in Mumbai. Another that I liked said "Drive in peace and arrive in one piece."
The horse race and polo grounds.
The world's largest laundry!
Look at all the jeans! A guide told his group that he's gets his laundry done there and has never had a piece of clothing lost.
When this laundry started they didn't read, so they have a color system to keep things in order.
There are no clothes pins, but they use 2 ropes to hold the laundry there.
I think this is Victoria Station in silhouette.
Sunset in Mumbai as we leave India.
