Is this heaven? Gods Terminal?
This cross with red marked the spot where on July 27, 1361 blood flowed as far as this spot from the battle outside the South Gate. 1,800 men lost their lives that day.
The Town Square.
Cornucopia Fountain-This fountain depicts a cornucopia goddess. It is the centerpiece of the Packhusplan square. I thought the frogs were cute.
I just loved this scene of a bicycle and boat model in the window, along with the texture on the walls. This was something we walked by as we explored.
More beautiful scenes around Visby with the lovely roses and old buildings.
Visby City Wall is a medieval defensive wall surrounding the town and is the strongest, most extensive, and best preserved medieval city wall in Scandinavia.
We just happened to visit Visby when their Medieval Week (a medieval festival) was going on. This was in the market area, so we could've bought some costumes to join in the fun.
We joined in the fun anyway without costumes. Brian did well with his archery and even got the hog in the last shot.
Here's the proof.
Doug was next and also did well.
Now it's my turn. I did hit the target and hog, but wasn't as close to the bulls eye.
This guy has a great outfit!
This man was making all kinds of metal work using old tools.
These candy apples look great as well as the vender!
The Medieval Camp, where campers do their best to maintain the illusion of the best parts of the Middle Ages 24 hours a day. No modern food or conveniences.
Here people are learning to use a sword.
How about a medieval cooking class?
They are dressed like a medieval family, but I don't think the stroller was from the medieval days.
The Maiden's Tower-There's a folktale that the daughter of Nils Goldsmith was imprisoned alive here for betraying Visby to the Danish King Valdemar Atterdag.
In the food court area they are roasting some hog.over an open fire.
Ruins of St Clement Church-Sadly, after the Reformation this church was abandoned. After that it was used as a cattle-shed, an outhouse, and q quarry for building materials.
A peak at Visby Sankta Maria Domkyrka. Currently they are celebrating the 800th year of being a church (1225-2025).
On a street in Visby here we see people dressed up to go to the festival.
I like the decorated manhole covers.
A beautiful city street archway near the church.
Visby Cathedral Sankta Maria is both a vibrant place of worship and a cultural treasure! I really enjoyed visiting this church!
I was captivated by this stained glass window titled "the Apocalypse".
Inside Visby Cathedral Sankta Maria there were beautiful candle holders.
Revelation 12:17 is carved in partly rotten Ash. The tree is turned upside down with the root part upwards. On the leftside, Michael fights the dragon, which is in the center, and Christ hangs on the right side with his arm in the dragon's mouth.
This same sculpture showing more of the archangel, Michael.
One of the side aisles of the church, where at the table you can write down your concerns or prayers and then place in a boat that is nearby.
A small chapel in the church where I was able to sit for some quiet time of prayer.
The main altarpiece of the cathedral was installed in 1905 and designed by Haig. It is in a Gothic revival style, displaying the Adoration of the Magi in the central panel.
A selfie with the Visby Cathedral Sankta Maria.
View over the town of Visby and ruins of another church.
Looking over the red roofs of Visby along with some church ruins.
The ancient city wall in an upper section and more people dressed for the festival.
St Nicolai Kultudralen – is a 900-year-old church ruin situated in the core of the famous medieval walled city of Visby known as “the city of roses and ruins”. The ruin has been transformed into a unique and modern venue that is perfect for concerts.
A concert is exactly what I heard here, a medieval one with medieval instruments and songs.
Such a cute little festival participant.
Another festival participant that posed for me.
I bought some candied pecans here that were so good!
In the Botaniska Trädgård (botanical garden), the rose terrace area.
Still in the lovely botanical garden.
And another beautiful spot to sit and rest.
A type of Hemerocallis or Daylily.
A Black-Beauty Lily.
The Ovalen (the oval) part of the garden.
Beautiful harp musician!
More people dressed for the festival. It was hot this day, so I don't know how they were able to tolerate those hot clothes.
The ceiling inside St Olof's Church ruin-The church was named after the Norwegian King Olaf II. He is believed to have Christianised the island of Gotland.
The city streets of Visby were just beautiful!
The Gunpowder Tower formerly the Sheep Tower is the oldest tower in the city wall of Visby and was built in 1160 as a defensive tower to protect the medieval harbor.
Now you can see how close the Gunpowder Tower is to the sea.
Almedalen is a picturesque park known for Almedalen Week, which has become one of Sweden's most important political events. Why ruin this beauty with politics?
