The German Navy at Kiel.
A German Naval Yard.
When I saw this ship, I could tell that I had come to Germany.
The Stena Line Headquarters Building, one of the world's largest ferry lines. Also, the Fernmeldeturm Kiel (Telecommunication Tower Kiel) is a modern landmark of Kiel in Germany, completed in 1975.
This skyscraper was built in 1969-70 preparing for the 1972 Olympics.
Looking at Kiel and St. Nikolai Church from the ship.
Skulptur "Der Segler" (The Sailor Sculpture) It should be remembered that Kiel was the site of the Olympic regattas of the Berlin Olympics in 1936 and even those of 1972 in Munich.
The maritime museum (Schiffahrtsmuseum) is located in a former fish market hall built in 1909 at the Kiel harbour..
St. Nikolai Church-In World War II, the church was badly damaged by bombing. The church was completely demolished because the ruin was unstable. It was rebuilt from 1950.
Another side of St. Nikolai Church-The tallest tower is 400 ft.
Geistkämpfer (The Fighter of the Spirit)-An angel with a sword dominates a wolf-like creature, as a symbol for the superiority of spirit and its victory over evil.
The Holstenfleet forms Kiel's new center in the city center.
Kleiner Kiel is a beautiful viewing area of a body of water.
Rathaus Kiel (Kiel City Hall)- It was built at the beginning of the 20th century. The 348 ft. high town hall tower is one of its landmarks.
Rathausplatz (City Hall)-The clock tower is a replica of the clock tower in St Mark's Square in Venice, only 23 ft taller. The City Hall has been the home of Kiel‘s city politics since 1911.
Allied bomber pilots spared the town hall tower in order to use it as a "orientation point" for their further air raids. Bullet holes and traces of splinters are preserved in the town hall façade, which you can see here along with a beautiful flower tower.
Here Doug points out where some of the bullets hit and the damage done to the facade.

Europaplatz Flowing Plaza-Fountains that stretch throughout the plaza emphasize the maritime wave motif.
Europaplatz Flowing Plaza looking at Wunderino Arena. It is primarily used by THW Kiel (team handball) and as a venue for rock/pop concerts.
Skulptur "Flötenbläser"-The flute player stands in the heart of Kiel's city centre on the edge of Holstenplatz in close proximity to the new town hall in a well-kept flowerbed.
Skulptur “Die fünf Erdteile” (The 5 Continents)-The work was designed in 1961 by the artist Bernhard Heiliger. The slight resemblance to a group of people and the outlines of the continents explain the title.
The new design for the Bootshafen (boat harbour) has created a lively, appealing place linking the city centre with the main harbour.
Sartori & Berger-Their claim is "Since our foundation in 1858, we have successfully mastered almost every conceivable maritime challenge in the North Sea and Baltic Sea"
This was the first time I noticed something like this connected to our ship, called Shore Connect. This is how we got our power when at the port.
Holtenau High Bridge over the Kiel Canal-One of the world's most frequented artificial waterways with an annual average of 32,000 ships. An average of 290 mi is saved by using the Kiel Canal instead of going around the Jutland Peninsula.
It was cloudy and drizzly all day until we sailed away, then we had beautiful partly sunny skies. This was a small port village we passed.
Some very nice seaside homes.
A very nice resort we passed in the channel going back to the Baltic Sea.
The U-Boot-Ehrenmal Möltenort (Möltenort U-Boat Memorial) in Heikendorf near Kiel is a memorial site commemorating the sailors who died serving in U-Boat units during the First and Second World Wars.
Here I see a camp ground area, the first that I've seen in Europe.
Laboe Windmill-It originally existed since 1872, but it burned down twice and was reconstructed twice, the 2nd being in 1923. Since then, the windmill has existed as it can be seen today. In 1964 the operation of the mill was stopped.
Strandhotel Laboe-Looks nice from this view.
Laboe must be the perfect destination For kitesurfers, because look how many are in this photo!
A closer-up photo of the kitesurfers, and also windsurfers.
Up-close of a windsurfer.
The Laboe Naval Memorial-The monument originally memorialized the ones who died in World War I while serving in the Imperial German Navy. In 1954 it was rededicated as a memorial for the sailors of all nationalities who were lost at sea and at the same time a memorial for peaceful sailing in open seas.
Another photo of Laboe Naval Memorial where you can see a World War II-era German submarine U-995, the world's only remaining Type VII U-boat.
